The couple were unable to celebrate with a hug or a kiss due to coronavirus restrictions so Denis improvised outside Fairfield Nursing Home in Drimoleague, Cork, Ireland.

Speaking to The Neil Prendeville Show on Cork's RedFM, their daughter Annette Manning told how they celebrated “50 years of wedding bliss.”

She said: "Mum has been in a nursing home for the last 12 months in Fairfield and they're absolutely amazing in there.

“There has been a lockdown for the last few weeks so Dad hasn't been able to see Mum.

SPEECHLESS

“Obviously this was very hard for both of them so we got onto the nursing home and the chef in there Niamh Condon produced this cake.

“I was speechless. Mum has special dietary requirements and I never thought she would be able to have a slice of chocolate cake when she went into the nursing home but thanks to Niamh, she changed all that."

She added: “My brother Donal drove Dad to the nursing home and he went around the side window to mum.

“The window had to stay closed but mum hadn't been expecting it and they hadn't seen each other in a few weeks.”

Annette continued: “It was a very very emotional time. Mum was in her nursing home bed and dad was at her bedroom window just knocking and trying to serenade her but sure the windows were closed.

“I think it was Brown Eyed Girl by Van Morrison. Mum has lovely brown eyes.

“50 years ago they tied the knot. 50 years of wedding bliss. The two little lovebirds it was absolutely heartwarming."
