The fifth season will eventually return to USA Network and Netflix, but is currently on hold amid the coronavirus pandemic, but Alice Braga will be returning to screens very soon. The Queen of the South star has both a Marvel and DC project lined up, and recently expressed her excitement for joining James Gunn’s superhero sequel, The Suicide Squad.
DC Comics’ highly anticipated live convention, the DC FanDome, introduced comic book enthusiasts to a slew of new superhero projects coming in 2021.
Alongside Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Robert Pattinson’s brooding take on Batman, the FanDome also revealed the line up of James Gunn’s Suicide Squad sequel.
A brand new ‘role call’ trailer confirmed Alice Braga will be playing a character named SolSoria, counter to previous rumours she could be starring as Batman nemesis Poison Ivy.
She joins the cast alongside Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman and Jai Courtney reprising their roles as Harley Quinn, Rick Flag and Captain Boomerang respectively.
Also along for the ride are newcomers such as blockbuster star Idris Elba, comedian Pete Davidson and Doctor Who’s Peter Capaldi.
The film is expected to serve as a pseudo-sequel to David Ayer’s 2016 Suicide Squad film, and will involve a team of misfit anti-heroes completing dangerous tasks for government agent Amanda Waller (Viola Davis).
Braga’s gun-toting soldier SolSoria is apparently a new character not appearing in DC comics, although her name bears a resemblance to minor Squad member Juan Soria.
Although little is known about her role in the film, the Queen of the South star assured fans are going to eat up every minute of director James Gunn’s fresh take on the superhero genre.
She teased: “I think people are gonna love this film. I’m a big fan of James Gunn, I love Guardians of the Galaxy and what he did with that.”
Gunn directed both Guardians of the Galaxy films for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and is expected to bring his quirky style and edgy sense of humour to the world of DC.
Braga couldn’t reveal any plot details or backstory to her own character, but promised the anticipated sequel contains all the thrills and spills expected from a superhero blockbuster.
She continued: “He brought fun and laughs and action to a superhero spaceship film.”

“So I think he’s a very talented director and he’s bringing that to The Suicide Squad and he’s bringing his vision and his energy as a creative person.”
After the original Suicide Squad received mixed reviews for its uneven tone, convoluted plot and Jared Leto’s divisive take on the Joker, DC fans are hoping James Gunns sequel will provide the franchise with a breath of fresh air.
The new instalment will feature Margot Robbie’s acclaimed performance as Harley Quinn front and centre, as well as a roster of D-List villains and oddball anti-heroes.
Praising the new and returning cast, Braga added: “It was great to join that cast, it’s an amazing cast! From Idris Elba to Viola to everyone. I’m a huge fan of Margot Robbie.”
Alice Braga is also set to become a rare star to play a role in both Marvel and DC projects, as she will also be seen in X-Men spin-off New Mutants this September.
The star revealed she was honoured to join two gigantic comic book families over the next couple of years.
She said: “It’s an honor. I never thought this would happen and it did. Just in the sense of doing ‘New Mutants’ and then ‘Suicide Squad’ happened I was like, ‘Oh my God.’
“Wait, DC and Marvel?’ For a fan? For a nerd like me? That’s a trophy. I couldn’t ask for more!”
Queen of the South’s fifth season may be delayed, but Alice Braga is still set to take the comic world by storm over the next few years.
Queen of the South season 4 is available to stream on Netflix. The Suicide Squad will be released in cinemas in 2021.
