British Airways refunds: How can you get a refund on your British Airways

After Easyjet grounded its entire fleet of aircraft on Monday, British Airways decided yesterday it was time to cancel all flights to and from Gatwick Airport over the coronavirus pandemic. The airline hasn’t given any indication as to when flights will be up and running again. So how can you get a refund on your British Airways flights?

 Why has British Airways cancelled Gatwick flights?

A BA spokesperson said: “Due to the considerable restrictions and challenging market environment, like many other airlines we will temporarily suspend our flying schedule at Gatwick.

“We are contacting affected customers to discuss their options.”

Gatwick airport will also be closing one of its two terminals.

British Airways will be keeping equipment for essential functions at the airport, like maintenance, towing and cleaning, to make sure they are able to restart promptly when given the go-ahead.

Will I get a refund on my British Airways flights?

The airline has confirmed affected customers will be entitled to a full refund, a voucher of the same amount, or another flight worth the same.

You don’t need to reach out to the airline, they will be contacting those who are affected.

If you aren’t contacted by BA, you can ring their customer service team yourself on 0344 493 0787.

If you booked through a third-party, you should contact them instead of BA to see where you stand.

How else can I get my money back?

If the above doesn’t work for you, you might be able to claim your money back through your debit or credit card company.

Under section 75 of the Consumer Rights Act, credit card payments between £100 and £30,000 are covered.

The consumer group Which? has a free tool you can use to contact your credit card provider directly.

If you booked using a debit card you could try using the Chargeback scheme, as long as your purchase was under £100.

You’ll need to contact your card provider to start a claim, but there is no legal guarantee that you will be successful.

What is the current travel advice for the UK?

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office is currently advising British nationals against all but essential international travel, since any country or area is able to restrict travel without giving notice.

If you’re currently abroad, you are advised to return home now.

These travel bans are predicted to last for the rest of the year, even if lockdown is lifted.
