Kristen Bell Recalls Being Criticized for Her Looks During Early Career
The ‘Frozen’ actress opens up on past struggles as an aspiring actress and remembers being told she was not pretty enough for Hollywood when she was pursuing career in the entertainment industry.
AceShowbiz –Kristen Bell was criticised for her looks early in her career.
The “Frozen II” actress, 39, told Vanity Fair that when she was starting out as an actress, she’d constantly be told she was “not pretty enough to play the pretty girl.”
“I would get feedback from an audition: ‘Well, you’re not pretty enough to play the pretty girl, but you’re not quirky enough or weird enough to play the weird girl,’ ” she recalled.
However, for the aspiring Hollywood star, she was just grateful to be considered for a part at all, adding: “I was like ‘OK so does that just mean I can’t be an actor? What does that mean?’ That’s what I was getting feedback on in every single audition.”
Now, “The Good Place” star said the criteria for acting roles has shifted, and producers aren’t so preoccupied with looks anymore, with casting directors favouring, “dimensional people that don’t have to be one thing.”
“I think as I’ve grown older, those boxes have changed and they’ve almost gone away,” she explained. “It’s not the ’80s where you have to have the popular girl and then the nerd who gets the guy. It’s not that anymore and I’m really grateful for that.”
“It opens up a lot of opportunities for everyone to play and pretend, which is the most fun part.”
